Wild Dog Tri Club was formed in September 1997. The name
comes from Warragul being the local Aboriginal word for Wild Dog. Initially,
interested members trained together in Warragul and held some club events at the
Blue Rock Dam at Willow Grove. Membership in 1997-1998 was 31, including adults
and juniors. Founding club President Greg Bosch also designed the original
club logo. The original club colours were purple and white, with a
scribbled logo, similar to a dog scratching. The paw print logo and change
to black and orange came in 1999.
In 1999, the club became co-tenants with the Warragul Tennis Club in the clubrooms located opposite the Warragul Leisure Centre. This gave the club a place to meet and hold training and races. Interest in the club grew, and in 1999 the first Summer Series of races were held. These races covered a range of distances from 150m swim, 3km bike and 1km run (Fun Tri), through to A Grade events over 400m/18km/5km. Junior races are also offered at Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16. Races are now held on Saturday afternoons, from November through to March each year. The club has also hosted VSSSA selection events and local school triathlons. Several club members have gone on to both Forster and now Port Macquarie Australian Ironman Championships.
